KATSINA: Man in court for raping neighbour’s mentally ill daughter


A 21-year-old man identified as Adamu Umar has been charged to court for allegedly taking advantage
of the mental illness of his neighbour’s daughter, Hauwau, 30, to rape her.

The incident which occurred at Kakumi Village in the Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State was brought to the notice of security operatives by the victim’s father, Mallam Umar Labaran, who reported the matter at the Bakori police division.

When apprehended, Umar who lives in the same compound with his victim owned up to the crime in his first confessional statement and was subsequently dragged before the Katsina State Magistrate Court for prosecution.

Inspector Sani Ado, the prosecuting counsel for the police, said Umar acted contrary to Section 283 of the Penal Code.
 
While addressing the court, the magistrate, Hajiya Fadile Dikko said; “This court will not ask you whether the allegation against you is true or false as the offence of rape is only triable by the high court.

“After police investigation, the duplicate of your case file will be sent to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice, after which, if a prima facie case is established against you, you will be tried at the high court.”

Dikko later adjourned the case till August 23, 2017 for mention while directing that Umar should be remanded in prison custody till the resumption of further hearing.
