A 21-year-old man identified as Adamu Umar has been charged to court
for allegedly taking advantage
of the mental illness of his neighbour’s
daughter, Hauwau, 30, to rape her.
The incident which occurred at Kakumi Village in the Bakori Local
Government Area of Katsina State was brought to the notice of security
operatives by the victim’s father, Mallam Umar Labaran, who reported the
matter at the Bakori police division.
When apprehended, Umar who lives in the same compound with his victim
owned up to the crime in his first confessional statement and was
subsequently dragged before the Katsina State Magistrate Court for

While addressing the court, the magistrate, Hajiya Fadile Dikko said;
“This court will not ask you whether the allegation against you is true
or false as the offence of rape is only triable by the high court.
“After police investigation, the duplicate of your case file will be
sent to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice, after which, if a
prima facie case is established against you, you will be tried at the
high court.”
Dikko later adjourned the case till August 23, 2017 for mention while
directing that Umar should be remanded in prison custody till the
resumption of further hearing.
