Acting president Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday, following his return
from London,
appeared to have dismissed speculations and assertions by
senior members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that
ailing President Muhammadu Buhari had been on life-support.
In his comments to reporters before the weekly Federal Executive
Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, Prof Osinbajo told reporters that he
went to London to “check up on” President Buhari who has been away since
 May 7.
He added that “Of course I’ve been speaking to him on the phone and I
thought it would be a good thing to go and see him and generally check
up on how he was doing and also to brief him on developments”.
“We had a very good conversation on wide-ranging issues and he’s in
very good spirits. He’s recuperating very quickly and he’s doing very
well”, he continued.
“The meeting lasted for well over an hour”; we are expecting him back in very shortly,” he concluded.
Buhari, 74, has spent 66 days in London since his return to United
Kingdom on May 7, for a follow-up medical treatment. He had in his
earlier trip to London in January spent 49 days before returning to
Nigeria.
The Acting President’s trip came only days after the President’s
wife’s visit. Aisha Buhari had upon visiting her husband, responded to
Sen Shehu Sani’s metaphorical facebook post in like manner, hinting at
fractures in the cabinet and President Buhari’s imminent return.
Further developments and reactions on this matter are sure to arise
as Osinbajo’s statements have not answered the many questions that still
remain about Buhari’s exact state of health, the cost of his treatment
and his expected date of return.
