Buhari signs Bill on Endangered Species (Photos)

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday signed the Bill on Endangered Species (Control of International Trade and Traffic) Amendment Act 2016 into law.

This was the last Bill signed by the President for 2016 making it the 17th Bill signed into law in the year.
The amendment bill was passed and forwarded to the President by the National Assembly for his assent.
According to the Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang: “This is one of the 10 bills that were forwarded by the National Assembly to Mr President, and he has just assented to this, almost completing every action on all the bills that were forwarded to him by the National Assembly.

“The intent of this amendment is to bring the penalty provisions in line with economic realities and to act as a deterrent or deter people from trafficking and trading in endangered species because they are preserves of the country.
“It will discourage traffic and it will improve agriculture and the preservation of endangered species in Nigeria. This is an amendment bill.
“This law has been in existence, but what the National Assembly has done and the president has assented to today is to increase the penalty for violation of the provisions”, he stated.

Military's capture of Boko Harams enclave has vindicated me- Ali Modu Sheriff

The irony of it all is that those who feared my political career turned around to say that I created Boko haram but God has vindicated me'" he said

How pastor Ashimolowo and his church members lost $4.8M to Ponzi scheme

An inquiry report published recently by the Charity Commission for England and Wales, has revealed that Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo and his 12,000-member church in Britain, Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) have lost the sum of $4.8 million to a Ponzi scheme.

According to the inquiry report, Ashimolowo and his church members thought they invested the equivalent of the amount in charitable funds only to discover the money was put in a Ponzi scheme run by an ex Premier League football player.

The report revealed that the church trustees doled out over $6.1 million (£5 million) in four installments between June 2009 and June 2010 to a former trustee who guaranteed that the investments would earn a sizable return totaling about 55 percent in a year.

“The inquiry established that in practice, however, the investments resulted in a net loss of £3.9 million to the charity,” the report explained.

The report states that the church’s trustees who handed over the funds were guilty of “mismanagement.”
The commission found that the church’s trustees did not “exercise sufficient care when making the decisions to invest £5 million of the charity’s funds through the ex-trustee’s investment scheme.”

“They did not follow all the principles expected of trustees to ensure they comply with their trustee duties under charity law when making those decisions,” the report concluded.

NAFDAC says there’s contaminated but not plastic rice in Nigeria

Authorities of the National Agency For Food and Drug Administration NAFDAC, yesterday addressed a joint press conference with officials of the Nigeria Customs Service NCS, where the final result on tests carried out on the "Plastic Rice" seized by some Customs officers in Lagos(read here), was released. According to the acting Director General of NAFDAC, Yetunde Oni, the bags of rice seized were not plastic rice but rice contaminated by microorganisms. Following the report of the seizure of the "suspected fake rice", by men of Nigeria Customs Service, the Agency swung into action by sending team of inspectors to the office of the Customs Area Comptroller, Federal Operations Ikeja, Lagos to draw samples from the seized consignment for Laboratory analysis. The product, branded as “Best Tomato” was in 25kg pack size, without NAFDAC number, no batch number, no date markings and no details of the manufacturer. The preliminary result of the analysis was conveyed to the Honorable Minister for Health, Prof Isaac F. Adewole and was made public on 22nd December, 2016 whilst awaiting the comprehensive result. I hereby this day the 29th December 2016 present the full Laboratory report as follows:

1. Floating - Negative
2. Sedimentation - Positive
3. Cooking - Normal
4. Odour - Normal
5. Colour - Off-white grains
6. Moisture - 13% (within specification)
7. Pre-ashing - Normal
8. Ash - 0.6% (within specification)
9. Lead and Cadmium - Not detected
10. Aerobic mesophillic count - 2.8x105cfu (above maximum limits)
11. Mould - 5.1x103cfu- (within specification)
12. Coli form - 7.5x103cfu (above maximum limits)
13. E-coli - <3cfu (within specification)
14. Packaging - Does not conform to NAFDAC pre-
packaging Food labeling regulations 2005

Based on the above Laboratory result, the product is not plastic but rice contaminated with microorganisms above permissible limit, hence the seized rice consignment is UNSATISFACTORY and therefore unwholesome for human consumption. The consignment upon handover by the Nigeria Customs Service shall be destroyed.

I wish to thank the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service and his men for the timely interception of this unwholesome rice. NAFDAC in collaboration with Nigerian Customs Service will continue to intensify vigilance and surveillance activities at all entry ports and boarders.

May I use this medium to appeal to the General Public to report any suspicious case(s) about all NAFDAC regulated products to any of the NAFDAC offices across the Nation for prompt regulatory action. I appeal for continued support and cooperation of all Nigerian to team up with NAFDAC in our concerted effort to deliver on our mandate of safeguarding the health of the Nation.

Boko Haram leader Shekau resurfaces in new video, says group "safe and not flushed out of anywhere"

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau appeared in a new video on Thursday disputing a claim by the Nigerian army that the terrorist group had been uprooted from its Sambisa Forest stronghold. In a 25-minutes video shared online, Shekau who spoke in both Hausa and Arabic, said;

"We are safe. We have not been flushed out of anywhere. And tactics and strategies cannot reveal our location except if Allah wills by his decree. You should not be telling lies to the people. If you indeed crushed us, how can you see me like this? How many times have you killed us in your bogus death? Our aim is to establish an Islamic Caliphate and we have our own Caliphate, we are not part of Nigeria" Shekau said in the video, flanked by masked armed fighters.

It's not clear where and when the video was shot though Shekau claimed it was shot on Christmas day

Police foil plot to bomb Third Mainland Bridge, arrest suspect

The Nigerian police has arrested a man, Abiodun Amos aka Senti who is one of the leaders of a notorious militant group that operate in Ikorodu and Arepo areas of Lagos and Ogun states for was plotting, with some of his gang members who are currently at large, to bomb the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.
According to a statement released by Police Public Relations Officer, Don Awunah, a deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, the gang leader, Abiodun Amos, said yesterday, that his group planned to bomb the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos in November because the Federal Government failed to consider its members for amnesty.

 The suspect, Senti, is a 43-year-old native of Arogbo, in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State. He was arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT,

Amos said they were unable to carry out their plan because he got arrested on November 2, 2016, by the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, led by Abba Kyari, an Assistant Commissioner of Police.

Amos was apprehended and arrested in a hideout at a river bank in Majidun area of Ikorodu, Lagos, on Monday, where two AK 47 rifles were recovered from him. Two cartons of explosives, with the words Gelatine Dynamite inscribed on them, and detonators, were also recovered from the group’s operational saloon car.
Amos said:

‘’General” Ossy (leader of the gang) said if we don’t blow up the Third Mainland Bridge, government will not listen to us. We had concluded plans to carry out the attack by November ending. 

‘’I am the group’s explosives expert and before I was arrested we were going into the creeks to conclude plans on how to carry out the attack.”

“We went into bank robberies and kidnapping because we wanted to get government’s attention and all we wanted was for them to grant us amnesty and also offer us pipeline protection contract. ‘’We have made several appeals but government is not listening to us.

He added that their  kidnapping business ended when it became difficult for its members due to the presence of the military and policemen.

”The principal suspect is an Ijaw man and a Native of Ese Odo LGA of Ondo State. He is an Explosives Expert who specializes in assembling and modifying large scale Improvised Explosives Devices (IED) for terrorist act.

The suspect also volunteered confessional statement to the Police and named other members of the militant group that are still at large.

One of the core suspects of the gang who was mentioned by Amos as the person in possession of their explosive devices and the detonators, was trailed by the Police (IRT) Operatives on the 26th December, 2016 while driving a Toyota Camry Car. The suspect had 2 Cartons of Galantine Dynamite Explosives and 125 Detonators in the boot of the Car in a location in Ikorodu, on his way to connect with the other members of the militant gang to blow up the 3rd mainland bridge. However, when the suspect saw the police, he quickly jumped out of the car and made his escape into a bush.

Fortunately, the huge disaster of blowing up the bridge was averted after the explosive devices and the detonators were recovered by the Police IRT operatives and the Explosive Ordinance Department.”

The leader of the militant group, known as “General” Ossy Ibori, has allegedly coordinated many bank robberies and several high-profile kidnappings, including the kidnap of three school girls at Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary School in Ikorodu; kidnap of four landlords at Isheri North Area of Lagos; abduction of Oniba of Ibaland, Oba Goriola Oseni, among several others crimes.
He also boasted in an interview with Vanguard that his group had over 21 “generals” and had 7,800 battle-ready boys.

He added that the group is rich enough to fight the Federal Government, having acquired thousands of arms and ammunition similar to that of the military.

The police in s statement , said further investigation is being intensified to arrest all the other members of the militant gang still at large.

Don Awunah said:

“Yes, an individual was arrested. On sighting the policemen, the second suspect jumped out of his car and escaped into the bush, abandoning the operational vehicle. ‘’On searching the vehicle, two cartons of Gelatine dynamite explosives and hundreds of detonators were recovered in the boot of the car. Efforts to arrest the remaining gang members are in progress.”
